Save the WORLD, Save PLASTIC MATERIALS
INSIGHT
IFA : Innovate For Africa, is a group of proven leaders who are passionate about building more innovative mindsets across the African continent with a systematic learning and mentorship process.
THE HACK A THON
Utilizing the Hackathon approach which is a design thinking pattern involving the implementation of ideas from different people in a team. My Hackathon #4 is working assiduously to proffer sustainable solutions to plastic waste pollution and find innovative ways to populate recycling awareness and processes in our society.
ISSUE AREA / PROBLEM STATEMENT
While the Issue Area is Climate change caused by improper waste management practices from a huge percentage of the communities. We have been able to modify the Problem Statement thus "Waste in Nigeria is more like burned or improperly disposed leading to unprecedented environmental degradation as well as very low recycling efforts which stands currently at <10%-the question remains, How do we encourage recycling and ultimately saving the environment towards a sustainable future''
PRIMARY MARKRT RESEARCH
[PMR]
There are several means of conducting primary market research including the use of questionnaires, poll surveys, electronic interviews, physical interviews to list a few. However, we created a google interview format with salient questions for our respondents who filled these forms as suggestive as they could be.
We also conducted some one on one interviews to help define our research methodology.
QUESTIONS ASKED
15 questions were asked from each interview session, few of them but not of chronological order or higher priorities are :
1] what would change your mind towards recycling ?
2] how do you suggest we make recycling easier?
3] how do you dispose your plastic materials versus how you think they should be disposed?
LESSONS LEARNT
From the analysis of the responses to our questions, observation of patterns and pain points of our prospective users, it became apparent that
1] People will contribute to the success of recycling plastic waste materials if the process got easy
2] Proper and hygienic waste management procedures would encourage recycling and cleaner processes.
3] Awareness on adverse effect of bad plastic (waste) disposal and benefits of recycling of the same is improved on.
4] Nearly 80% of the society do not know how long it takes a plastic component to decompose.
UNDERSTANDING CHANGES FROM THE CUSTOMERS
Against the belief that most people in our society care less about the green environment, clogging of drainages, repelling scenery and huge loss from underutilized recycling culture, We deduced that a good percentage of the populace is ready to make the world a plastic devastated free place for all.
